Tree Trimming and Pruning in Syracuse, NY

Not every tree problem ends with a chainsaw and a stump.

Sometimes the tree’s fine. It’s just got a few bad habits.

The usual complaints

  • A limb grinding on the roof every time the wind blows.
  • Branches so low you duck to mow.
  • Dead wood up top waiting for the next storm to drop it.
  • The neighbor’s tree hanging over your yard. Polite conversation first.
  • So much shade the grass gave up two summers ago.

Good pruning vs. bad pruning

There’s a difference between trimming a tree and butchering it. You’ve seen the bad version around town: a maple chopped flat across the top so it looks like a lollipop somebody sat on. That’s called topping, and it usually makes the tree weaker. It grows back thick, weak sprouts, and those break off in the next ice storm.

A good crew cuts back to the right spot on the branch so the tree can seal it off. They take out the dead stuff and thin the crown so wind can pass through instead of turning the whole canopy into a sail. The tree looks like a tree when they’re done. That’s the goal.

When to do it

Most pruning can happen any time of year. A lot of crews like late winter, when the leaves are off and they can see the structure. Oaks are the exception people mention around here. Pruning them in late spring and summer can open the door to oak wilt, so many crews avoid it then. Ask the crew what they recommend for your trees.

Questions people ask

How often should trees be trimmed?

Depends on the tree. Many mature yard trees do fine with a check every few years. Fast growers near the house or wires may need it more often. The crew can tell you what yours needs.

Can the crew trim branches near power lines?

Not the lines running pole to pole. Those belong to the utility and get cleared by utility-approved crews. For the line from the pole to your house, ask the crew. Some will coordinate with National Grid.

My neighbor’s tree hangs over my yard. Can I trim it?

In general you can trim branches back to the property line, as long as you don’t damage the tree. Talk to the neighbor first. It goes better that way.

Is it okay to trim in winter?

Usually, yes. Many crews prefer it. The tree is dormant and they can see what they’re doing.
